Volunteers in Penistone and Stocksbridge with experience of home energy efficiency and renewable energy have formed a group to help others in our community. The Penistone and Stocksbridge Energy Information Group has been established to inform, inspire and help like-minded local people to implement their own practical energy-related schemes.
Energy usage efficiency can be improved in many ways, including loft cavity wall and underfloor insulation and double/triple window glazing. There are several different ‘renewable’ energy generation technologies such as solar power, wind power, ground/air source heat pumps. There are also many options for energy storage to reduce reliance on the grid.
Upper Don Community Energy is growing a network of people who use these technologies, and who are willing to share their experiences and knowledge across our community to help others save money on their energy bills and cut carbon emissions. The group was formed in June 21 through the Penistone and Stocksbridge Climate Action meetings. Since then, the group has increased its membership and is now helping others.
Heating homes accounts for 11% of UKs carbon emissions and our domestic electricity use accounts for approximately 8% of UK's carbon emissions (2018). Data shows that most sectors carbon emissions have reduced but in transport and domestic heating carbon reductions haven’t reduced that much over the last 10 years.

a community owned anaerobic digester using local sources of organic waste as a feed stock.
In September 2021 UDRE joined forces with Stocksbridge and Penistone Energy Information Group which formed during the Covid 19 pandemic and organised a series of on-line meetings.
In 2022 we participated in a series of climate action events and joined up with a group of people who formed the Penistone and Stocksbridge Energy Information Group.
The following list is the activities which we have been involved with in the last couple of years. We hope that you would be interested in participating; there is plenty to do to stop climate change and reduce energy bills!

- UDCE arose from a series of initiatives in the Upper Don valley by local groups and parish councils to increase the amount of renewable energy available in the area. These initiatives included one by The Stocksbridge Renewable Energy Group who worked with the Solar Energy in Future Societies Group (University of Sheffield) to hold 13 workshops resulting in a report examining a wide range of renewable options and transport solutions and an exhibition at The Hub in Stocksbridge in 2013.
- Hunshelf Parish Council and Penistone Friends of the Earth co-operated to assess the potential for micro hydro generator on the River Don and Little Don

- Home visits – this entails a small group of people visiting a household where there are already examples of energy efficiency measure or renewable energy technologies installed. This enables visitors to hear from the owner about the costs, benefits and pitfalls of the techniques. These renewable technologies include heat pumps, wind turbines, biomass and PV/solar, and the energy efficiency measures include mechanical ventilation heat recovery.
- Business visits – this will operate on the same basis as above. A small group of business owners and managers (including public sector) will visit an established business where both energy efficiency measures, and renewable energy have been installed. This will allow them to learn about installation and running costs and the effectiveness of the technologies employed.
- Public stalls at events and markets aimed at householders and providing basic information from expert sources on home energy efficiency/conservation measures and renewable sources of heat/ power and storage.
- Thermal imaging survey. These surveys will be offered free to householders, business owners/managers to provide them with a visual image showing where their building is losing heat. We will provide a list of local companies that they could contact to help them address these losses.
- Working with low-income household to reduce energy.
- Public meetings – we organised a public meeting in Penistone in 2021 on PV installations in homes, involving users and an experienced installer. We have one planned for the 9th June
