Our renewable energy group developed originally from a Sheffield University project in 2012 where a group of post-doctorate students wanted to investigate the potential for a small town (Stocksbridge) to generate renewable energy. This demonstrated the potential for solar, wind power and heat pumps (particularly from coal mine water).
After the project finished a group of people kept meeting and finally formed the Upper Don Renewable Energy in 2020 as a Community Benefit Society.
We have been particularly focused on renewable energy taking initiatives in community; hydro schemes, biodigesters and photo voltaic panels.
In 2022 we participated in a series of climate action events and joined up with a group of people who formed the Penistone and Stocksbridge Energy Information Group and since then we have merged into Upper Don Community Energy (remaining a community benefits society).
The following list is the activities which we have been involved with in the last couple of years. We hope that you would be interested in participating; there is plenty to do to stop climate change and reduce energy bills!
1. Home visits – this entails a small group of people visiting a household where there are already examples of energy efficiency measure or renewable energy technologies installed. This enables visitors to hear from the owner about the costs, benefits and pitfalls of the
techniques. These renewable technologies include heat pumps, wind turbines, biomass and PV/solar, and the energy efficiency measures include mechanical ventilation heat recovery.
2. Business visits – this will operate on the same basis as above. A small group of business owners and managers (including public sector) will visit an established business where both energy efficiency measures, and renewable energy have been installed. This will allow them to learn about installation and running costs and the effectiveness of the technologies
employed.
3. Public stalls at events and markets aimed at householders and providing basic information from expert sources on home energy efficiency/conservation measures and renewable sources of heat/ power and storage.
4. Thermal imaging survey. These surveys will be offered free to householders, business owners/managers to provide them with a visual image showing where their building is losing heat. We will provide a list of local companies that they could contact to help them address these losses.
5. School competition – this is aimed at all ages of students up to 18 to produce a project /written piece of work about climate change and protecting the environment, with the best judged pieces gaining a prizes.
6. Working with low-income household to reduce energy.
7. Public meetings – we organised a public meeting in Penistone in 2021 on PV installations in homes, involving users and an experienced installer. We have one planned for the 9th June
